How To Celebrate Your Sales Team Without Breaking The Bank

Do you ever get the feeling we do too much celebrating? Maybe we overdid it at some point with all of the participation trophies—the endless love and affirmation we showered on this generation of “me me me” Millennials… right?

Well, consider this: when was the last time you felt too celebrated?

Exactly. It’s been a while.

While you may have in your head that celebrating your sales team is a costly, non-revenue-generating endeavor, or just a downright waste of time, we’re here to assure you it’s not.

In fact, at the core of what we do, we believe celebrating sales (or all employees for that matter) is one of the simplest and most effective ways to jumpstart your productivity. Here’s how:

As the experts over at Kim Harrison’s Cutting Edge blog have so clearly put it: “Employee recognition isn’t rocket science – it is anobviousthing to do. Despite the unquestioned benefits arising from employee recognition, one of the mysteries of the workplace is that recognition invariably is done badly, if done at all.”

According to a recent Gallup survey, nearly 70% of employees don’t strongly feel that they’ve been recognized for their work lately—and what’s more startling is when you consider that employees who don’t feel recognized are twice as likely to quit within the year.

That means for your average team of ten, you’ve got seven employees who are eyeing the door. And you probably don’t have to be refreshed on the numbers, but hiring, training, and onboarding a new employee to their necessary level of productivity will cost a business tens of thousands of dollars.

Rethinking The Cost Of Employee Recognition

In that same Gallup analysis, employees identified the six most memorable types of recognition:

“Public recognition or acknowledgment via an award, certificate or commendation… private recognition from a boss, peer or customer… receiving or obtaining a high level of achievement through evaluations or reviews… promotion or increase in scope of work or responsibility to show trust… monetary award… personal satisfaction or pride in work.”

Now, how many of those by your own count involve big expenditures?

Spoiler: It’s one.

By a large margin, employees aren’t looking for their employers to constantly throw bags of money at them (though, when you write it out, it doesn’t sound terrible). What they’re after is acknowledgement in written and verbal form. They want to be seen, and they want to be known for what they are—a valuable part of your team.

The big secret to celebrating your employees without breaking the bank? It’s simply showing them the recognition they so totally deserve. It really is that simple: whether you’re taking the time to call them out in weekly wrap-up meetings, or printing out a thoughtful certificate, or just letting them pick the lunch place on Friday—more than anything, it’s about showing you noticed, and that you’re grateful.

Start small this week. Whether you’re creating a leaderboard that recognizes top earners, or you’re simply passing out handshakes after a well-fought week, take the time this week to reframe how you “celebrate” your employees. The results will certainly surprise you.
